5G Networks Impose New Challenges to the Digital Environment Management
The arrival of the 5G network to Latin America is revolutionizing the digital life of people, companies, and countries. This model makes it possible to achieve speeds of at least 50 megabits per second. In general, it is believed that the 5G network data processing and delivery speed will be up to 100 times faster than 4G networks (data from Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance).
This huge performance gain will make the number of connected devices explode. According to IDC, 10 million digital devices were connected to the 5G network in the world in 2019. By 2023 there will be 1 billion connections. This figure includes from personal computers or servers to IoT devices used in telemedicine applications or autonomous vehicles, as well as IIoT sensors essential for industrial processes. The 5G network will make it more urgent than ever to bring together previously isolated environments – such as IT and OT –, inserting these worlds into a single management vision. The same wave of innovation will also bring a growing appreciation of Smart Buildings.
“The 5G network will make the IT heterogeneity exceed all known limits, requiring industry professionals to be several steps ahead of the next digital challenge”, emphasizes Luis Arís, Business Manager at Paessler Latin America. “It is increasingly urgent to gain mastery over disparate and constantly changing technologies”.
One way to achieve this goal is to use solutions such as Paessler’s PRTG, a monitoring platform with over 2,500 multiprotocol sensors to manage the behavior of IT and Telecom networks, IoT, IIoT or hybrid IT/OT environments, in addition to data centers in general (data factories for Cloud Computing, Edge Computing or Fog Computing applications) and Smart Building projects.
PRTG is going to be at the upcoming 7th America Digital Latin American Congress of Business & Technology 2022 on September 7th and 8th. Paessler executives may disclosure details of how to apply PRTG at the most different monitoring challenges brought to LATAM by 5G Networks.
What until recently was a one-off issue – for example, the slowness of a corporate network – becomes a critical issue in the 5G era.
In the case of the healthcare vertical, for instance, the lack of connection with wearable devices that monitor the pressure, heart and mobility of patients can cause harm to the remotely monitored person. A study by the World Health Organization shows that by 2025 the integration between medicine and technology will be critical to ensure the delivery of health services to all populations, in all countries. Lives will depend on high-speed connections that simply cannot fail.
“The continuity of applications based on 5G networks depends on the organizations having a flexible and powerful solution, such as Paessler’s PRTG,” explains Arís. “It is a platform that delivers a predictive view to the manager, indicating in advance possible failures and allowing corrections to be made at the pace of the business”.
In the 5G era, choosing the right platform for monitoring digital environments is more critical than ever. It is advisable that you analyze factors such as which and how many devices will be monitored, what protocols will be used, and how many users will be using the platform simultaneously. Another essential step in this selection process is to move beyond the DEMO of the solution to the stage of conducting a Proof of Concept (POC). “This is the most strategic moment of the decision process – in the user company’s environment the qualities and solidity of the solution are verified. The POC is the test drive for the network administrator who knows that, with the arrival of 5G services, it will be more demanded than ever by the organization’s business areas,” explains Arís.
A study by IDC released in December 2020 indicates that by 2022, 65% of the world’s GDP will depend on digitized environments. This journey is not simple: a report produced in October 2020 by the Deloitte consultancy firm and the MIT Sloan publication analyzes findings from interviews with 3,700 US IT leaders. From this total, 87% said their mission is to promote innovation in their organizations. However, only 47% of the respondents said they had the necessary resources and maturity to do so.
“In the digital economy, whoever anticipates the management challenges that the 5G network brings to companies will win. PRTG is essential for this goal to be achieved on an ongoing basis, in order to preserve the user experience and, in this way, ensure the prosperity of our region,” summarizes Arís.
